identifying the obstacles

There’s a saying that ‘if your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough!’ Well, I can certainly relate to this. Going after what you believe to be important can be very scary indeed!

For many of us, dreaming big and setting great outcomes is fairly straightforward; we know what we want to achieve, even if we don’t yet know how to achieve it. Setting those outcomes is a critical part for guiding us forward, however if we don’t really believe they are possible, we are unlikely to get anywhere close to realising them.

Many of us who use our NLP skills to helps others, do so for a higher purpose; a belief that we want to help changes others’ lives for the better; to help people remove some of the disempowering and unhelpful beliefs, behaviours, and values that we all pick up along our way through life.

Having this higher purpose and guiding outcome is a brilliant starting point; believing we are capable of achieving this outcome is a key ingredient for success.

Uncovering the blocks and obstacles

Here’s a simple approach you can use to identify the possible blocks and obstacles for each of the outcomes you have.

If you haven’t read setting goals for your business, you might want to have a look at that blog first…

For each of your life swim lanes you have hopefully identified an outcome. Read it through a few times, allowing the words to sink in and gain meaning. Then ask yourself the following question:

If I am sitting here in 12 months’ time, not having achieved this outcome, what are all the reasons and excuses I will give for it?

Some may be linked to practical things such as time, resources, finances, etc. Others will be associated with some fears or limiting beliefs you have about being able to achieve it. You may even have made some limiting decisions about your ability to achieve it. For each one you identify, explore what the belief, decision, or fear is, why you have it, and what steps you need to take to remove, or upgrade it.

Make sure you do this for the outcomes in each swim lane; if you are anything like me, you’ll end up with a pretty long list! Some will overlap across outcomes, whilst others will be unique to a particular outcome, but all are relevant and need to be addressed.

Once you have your list, identify the work you need to do for yourself, or with the help of someone else, to further explore and resolve or upgrade the fears, beliefs, and decisions.

This may feel like a big ask; however I can assure you from personal experience that you will begin to manifest your outcomes more quicky and easily once these are out of the way. If you have a limited amount of time, why not plan in one or two items to work through each week. Before you know it, things will begin to feel different.

Why not give the exercise a go this week and let me know how you get on; I would love to hear from you.

Take care,

Jo
